Odds are that you or someone in your family regularly uses a prescription medication or over-the-counter medication. Studies estimate that as many as sixty-five percent of the United States’ population regularly takes prescription medication, and that as high as eighty-one percent of us take some kind of pill every day. When we take these medications, we presume and trust that the medications that were prescribed for us or that were placed on the store shelves are effective and safe. We also trust that that there has been effective regulatory oversight that insures the effectiveness and safety of those medications. However, that is not always true.

It has been estimated that annually over 200,000 people in this country suffer serious side effects from prescription drugs, and that as many as 100,000 Americans die each year from these same prescription drugs. That is twice the number of deaths in this country that occur annually as a result of motor vehicle accidents, and those estimates do not even account for the thousands of people who suffer adverse reactions to over-the-counter medications or “natural” supplements.

A common misperception among the general public is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regularly tests medications both before and after their use has been approved. The Institute of Medicine has stated that it is a widely held misperception that FDA approval of a new drug denotes a guarantee of safety and certainty about the risks and benefits of a drug. Quite simply, that is not the case. The FDA does not independently test any drugs and relies on pharmaceutical companies to test their drugs and to tell the truth about the testing. In order to execute the regulatory oversight with which the FDA is charged, it must receive a complete and truthful presentation of all facts pertaining to any medication, including the chemistry, manufacturing, preclinical and clinical studies. Unfortunately, that does not always happen.
